Abraham Lincon was born on February 12, 1809. He was born in Kentucky, moved to Indiana as a young boy, and finally settled with his family in Illinois. As a child, Lincoln attended school in a log cabin. Abraham Lincoln married Mary Todd in 1842, and they had four children: Robert, Edward, Willy and Tad. Only Robert Todd survived into adulthood. Lincoln practiced law in Illinois for twenty-five years, served four terms in the Illinois General Assembly, and served one term in the United States Congress. Lincoln frequently wore a stovetop hat, in which he kept important papers, and was nicknamed "Honest Abe." On November 6, 1860, he was elected the 16th preseident of the United States. He represented the Republican party from 1861-1865. Lincoln was president during the American Civil War. He defended the Union and advocated the abolition of slavery. On Good Friday, April 14, 1865, Lincoln attended a presentation of the play "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theatre with his wife and two guests. John Wilkes Booth entered the President's box and shot Lincoln in the head at point blank range. Lincoln die the next day on April 15, 1865. After his death, vice president Andrew Johnson became president. Lincoln was the first president to be assassinated.
